A Chapel with Heart: The Story of Celebrations Wedding Chapel

Our chapel has a rich and surprising history, deeply intertwined with the Horton community. Originally built in 1906 as the Horton Methodist Church, this building has seen many transformations over the years, each adding a new layer to its unique story.

Early Days

In the early 1800s, Horton (then known as Baldwin) was a wilderness inhabited by Native Americans and a few intrepid settlers. The first sermon was preached in a log cabin, and the first Methodist quarterly meeting was held in a barn!

The Union Church

In 1855, a "Union Church" was built, shared by Methodists and Universalists. Can you imagine sharing a church and having to bring your own lamp oil? This resourceful community spirit shines through in the stories of how the church was built – with donations of labor, materials, and even gravel!

A New Beginning

In 1906, the Methodists and Universalists built a new church, the very building that now houses Celebrations Wedding Chapel. The cornerstone was laid on August 21, 1906, a momentous occasion for the community.

A Legacy of Service

For over 60 years, the church served not only as a place of worship but also as a community hub, hosting 4-H clubs, garden clubs, and Boy Scouts. Dedicated individuals like W.A. Richardson, the Sunday School superintendent for 40 years, shaped the church's legacy.

From Antiques to Haute Cuisine

After the Methodists built a new church in 1969, the building embarked on a new chapter. It became an antique shop, then transformed into "Billingsgate," an exclusive French restaurant that hosted celebrities like Ted Nugent and Jeff Daniels. The restaurant's story took a dramatic turn when the managers, embroiled in legal trouble, vanished overnight!

A Family Affair and a New Purpose

In 1998, Reverend Christine's mother, Charlotte Sanders, discovered the abandoned building and saw its potential. It became a family home, an antique shop, and finally, Celebrations Wedding Chapel. Today, four generations of Reverend Christine's family cherish this historic landmark.
